Freedom
Phone Service (VoIP)
What is Freedom Phone
Service?
Freedom Phone Service, also
known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is
a technology that allows you to make telephone
calls using a broadband Internet connection
instead of a regular (or analog) phone line.
VoIP allows you to call other people who have a
telephone number, including local, long
distance, mobile, and international numbers.
Also, while some services only work over your
computer or a special VoIP phone, Freedom Phone
Service allows you to use a traditional phone by
simply using an adapter.
VoIP allows you to make
telephone calls using your local computer
network, which then utilizes a data network like
the Internet. VoIP converts the voice signal
from your telephone into a digital signal that
travels over the Internet and then converts it
back at the other end so you can speak to anyone
with a regular phone number. When placing a VoIP
call using a phone with an adapter, you'll hear
a dial-tone and dial just as you always have.
How can I place a VoIP
call?
All you have to do to place to
VoIP call is pick up your existing phone—using
an adapter that connects to your existing
high-speed DSL Internet connection—and
dial a number. The call goes through your local
telephone company (En-Tel Communications) and
then to a VoIP provider (En-Tel Broadband). The
phone call goes over the Internet to the called
party's local telephone company for the
completion of the call. Another way to place a
call is to utilize a microphone headset plugged
into your computer. The number is placed using
the keyboard and is routed through your DSL
modem.
What kind of equipment do I
need?
A broadband (high-speed
Internet) connection is required. The only other
piece of equipment needed will be an adapter box
that will be provided to you by En-Tel. This
adapter will connect to your computer and
directly to your telephone(s).
Can I take my phone adapter
with me when I travel?
You may use your VoIP service
wherever you travel as long as you have a
high-speed Internet connection available. In
that case, it would work the same as from your
home or business. The downside to this is 911
emergency services may not work properly.
What are some disadvantages
of Internet phone service?
If you're considering
replacing your traditional telephone service
with VoIP, there are some things to consider:
- VoIP service does not
work during power outages unless your home
system is backed up with a Universal Power
Supply (UPS).
- Not all VoIP services
connect directly to emergency services
through 911, although En-Tel has designed
our system to route through our telephone
network to provide 911 services. This allows
emergency services to locate your exact
location if you are calling from your home
address.
- VoIP providers may or may
not offer directory assistance and white
page listings.
What are some advantages of
Internet phone service?
There are a variety of VoIP
plans through Freedom Phone Service. These plans
provide local, statewide, and national toll-free
calling. This means you will not incur long
distance charges for telephone calls placed in
accordance with the calling plan you choose.
These plans also offer a variety of popular
calling features, such as Call Waiting, Call
Forwarding, and Voice Mail that are included in
each plan. |
